Oversized Clocks and Big Ben

One of the most attractive set designs that ever graced the silver screen is the Harry Potter Movie Franchise. One of their most astounding set pieces is the giant oversized clocks that dominate the screen when the camera pans over or across it. Not only are the clocks set designs, they are actually real honest to goodness working clocks.

For the real world, oversized clocks in ornamental designs make impressive wall decorations, especially if the wrought iron framing has beautiful scrolls and detailed enhancements that are works of arts on their own. Most common choices include the Arabic and Roman Numerals that are easier to see because of their large diameters. Even in commercial spaces, the giant clocks are impressive. The most famous of the clocks in this category is what is lovingly called “Big Ben.”

Big Ben is that great bell of the clock at the northend of the Palace of Westminster in London. It is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third tallest free standing clock tower in the world. It celebrates its 151st anniversary on May 31, 2010.

For homes, the most favoured of the oversized clocks is the longcase clock. Commonly known as the grandfather clock, it is a tall free-standing, weight-driven pendulum clock with the pendulum inside the tower. Most clocks of this style are commonly 1.8-2.4 meters or 6 to 8 feet tall. The English clockmaker William Clement is credited for developing this form of clock in 1670. The deep sound of the gong when it hits the hour on the hour makes for a feel of both grandeur and pride. Why that sound does that, it is unsure, but it strikes the soul of the one who hears it.

Somehow, the presence of a clock in a home is just taken for granted, not much emotion there. However, the presence of impressively designed giant clocks strikes something in all that the need to have one in our homes gives us a sense of fulfilment. Probably because we always imagine these clocks in luxury homes that are hard to achieve. Whatever it is, there is something more in the giant clocks that can be truly explained by mere words.

The oversized clocks that simply hang on the walls come in various designs, and depending on that can cost from$200 to $400 or more. They come with wall brackets and can be hung on solid walls. There are lightweight ones but these are not really the quality clocks, they are more like faux pieces. Make sure that the wall is solid when you hang them as they can bring down a plaster wall because of the pull of the weight.
